Just a quick performing update:
I will be conducting the Clarion County High School High School Honors Concert this coming Thursday. The concert will start at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at Allegheny Clarion Valley Senior High School. If you are interested in attending and are close to the event, please do so -it is going to be a great concert.
Mr. Scott Ditullio will be hosting the event and there will be a number of county school districts represented. In addition to the symphonic concert, the county chorus will perform at the event.
The compositions that I’ve selected for the concert are as follows:
- Allegro Animato ~Frank Erickson
- On a Hymn Song of Philip Bliss ~David R. Holsinger
- A Copland Portrait ~Clare Grundman
- American Visions ~Travis J. Weller
- Caccia ~Francis McBeth
- Abbey Road: A Symphonic Portrait ~Ira Hearshen
- Rolling Thunder ~Henry Fillmore
Post Scriptum:
The all-day SoundTree/Korg/SoundBeam seminar I hosted at GCC this past Monday was fantastic! (more to come about this) In addition, the Mercer County Honors Band that I conducted ten days ago was extremely successful as well. After this week, I can finally begin focusing on my upcoming Christmas and Winter Concerts and posting a number of delayed articles on MusTech.Net! It’s really the calm before the storm of my preparations for the soon-arriving Mid-West Band Clinic! I keep thinking it’s going to slow down.. hopefully this summer! :)
[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Joseph Pisano Ph.D., Murray the Robot. Murray the Robot said: New from @pisanojm: Dr. Pisano To Conduct The Clarion County High School Band On 11-18-2010 http://bit.ly/caZxA6 […]
A future post perhaps: How did you get started doing guest jobs? I imagine getting the first gig is the hardest?
Quick Thoughts:
This type of thing is typically a network based concept. Who has seen you conduct, who has seen you work with kids, who has seen you work your own ensembles, seen your own ensembles, etc. It helps to have your ensembles be well-known, highly-active and successful and to be directing college/university bands and/or community/regional bands. Formal Masters or higher/education in conducting is helpful, as well as a terminal degree.
In the end the big thing is who knows you conduct, but better who knows you conduct well and can contribute to the overall progress of the group both musically and in other developmental areas.
Are you inspiring? Can you connect and instill a sense of motivation to the student? Are you published? Do you compose? Do you compete? Are you a great performer?, etc. I’ll think about this in detail for a future post.
