I have a secret that is no longer going to be so after this post. If you are a PC user, your desktop administration life is about to get wayyyyy easier. For over two years I’ve been using a program that literally allows me to forget about where and when I put all of my files on my computer -even what I named them! It’s called Copernic Desktop Search, it’s a dream, and it’s one of the flagship software programs found at Copernic.com:

Quite frankly, it’s amazing. I’ve tried a number of “desktop search” engines over the years and honestly -NOTHING compares to the power and simplicity of the Copernic Desktop Search Engine. Did I say NOTHING? Yes, it’s true…
NOTHING I’ve found, whether freeware, open-source, payware, or otherwise, compares to the power of file management and search capabilities that this piece of software provides me.

Here’s the best thing about it.. It’s free for Home and Non-Commercial use. Although the free version is a somewhat tamer version of the professional (@ $49.95 U.S. ) it is nonetheless amazing and there are not any nag screens or lack of useful features.

Copernic’s interface is totally useful, and easily allows you to find all of the files you work with on a daily basis: Word, Excel, Docs, PowerPoints, PDFs, HTML, Word Perfect, Text Files, Zip Files, music, videos, pictures, etc. In addition, it will locate email attachments as well as index the words of all of your email (and all other supported file types) on your computer if you use Outlook, Express, Eudora or any of the Mozilla clients.

(...)
Read the rest of Computer Organizational Secret #1: Copernic Desktop Search -Freeware (538 words)

Welcome to 2009 and the Official List of the 100 Music Education Bloggers (ME Bloggers)! When I first announced that I would be setting a goal to have 100 Music Education Experts Blogging by January 1st of 2009 back in December of 2007, some believed it wouldn’t actually happen… but it did! I believed from the start that I/we would be able to start a community of Music Education Bloggers in only a year’s time; but, I can tell you that the road was a long one complete with its “ups and downs”…but the road less traveled usually is the one with the most benefits at the end of the journey. This campaign certainly has been a benefit not only to those that are included in the list, but every single person that reads what they are writing about.

There were a number of aspects of the campaign that I wanted to instill in the essence of the ME Blogger Campaign. First, I wanted to build a community of Music Education Expertsthat would take advantage of the Web 2.0 platform and start a community that would allow them to share their expertise with each other and the world. My hope for the community, and the community that builds upon those of the 100 ME bloggers, is that we continue to have an open a dialog about our profession, mission, and the importance of music in the daily lives of people, not only among our ourselves, but among all those that come across our writings, freely, with each other.

Secondly, I wanted to build a community that was non-exclusive, not completely ivory tower, not completely practice oriented, not completely acting educators, nor exclusive of those in the so-called “fringe areas” of acceptable music genres - all types of music are acceptable for learning, discussion, and enrichment. This community would also not be centered around one country, nor any particular gender or ethnicity. With this in mind, you will see that the 100 ME Bloggersare made up of established professionals, professors, doctors, teachers, music merchants, performers, practitioners, and even a few inspiring music students. The ME Bloggers comprise of multiple ethnicities, multiple diversities, and are from varying geographical locations and all of them have one ideal in common with one another: the pursuit of the application of music for the betterment and enrichment of the lives of people everywhere!

Lastly, I wanted to show how easy it is to utilize the Blog platform as technological means to multiple ends:

Reflection, Introspect, & Thought Crystallization

Sharing knowledge with their students, peers or the world (global conversations)

Contributing to a larger database of information (active research)

Writing Practice (There is a tree-ware book in all of us!)

Creative Outlets

Digital Mentoring

Active Sharing of Media (Pictures/Photos/Webcasts/Podcasts/Vidcasts)

Create a network of peers and colleagues

Advertise your concerts, clinics, yourself, or whatever (publicity)

I hope that those of you who are able to gain from the fruits of the efforts of the 100 ME Bloggers come to know the real truth of the grass-roots, and pioneering effort that is accomplished by the existence of this campaign and the works of those that are a part of it. Regardless, of whether or not those that are a part of this campaign (or those not part of the campaign that are giving of their time and music expertise freely) blog for another year or 50 more years (or migrate to the forthcoming Web 3.0 phenomenon), the digital imprint of this campaign is cast in binary and has been unleashed on the networked world. In a digital world full of “mis-information” of “no-information” about our field, the void of “better” and free information, is starting to populate the long un-filled void… baby steps…

In the months to come, it is my hope to write more about how to continue to grow as a Music Blogging/ Web 2.0 Integrated Community. In the short future, I will be posting a number of ways to keep track of all of the information being put out by the 100 ME Bloggers and show how this tremendous resource can be contained and utilized efficiently by anyone who would like to glean the gems that are coming out, daily, by the ME Bloggers.

To answer a few questions up front that some of you may be asking now the ME Blogger Campaign is over, I will not be extending this list in the future as the number of Music Education Bloggers has exploded with the excitement that has/is being generated by the pioneers on this list. I will, however, continue to highlight, encourage, all the “newbie” ME Bloggers through posts and direction. I also can tell you that any of the ME Bloggers will help you get started if you ask them. If you are thinking about starting a Music Blog or Website for any reason, don’t wait, contribute today by starting your own.

In all seriousness though, Brian Balmages who is an outstanding composer has done a great job as the chief editor for FJH (and very savvy with regard to technology) and the works that he, Travis, Tim Loest and others at FJH are putting out are of the highest quality. They should be on every-one’s list to peruse and perform. Travis’ composition American Visions, is a must have for any library and I encourage you to see for yourselves.

Well in at least one of two updates that I’m going to post from the Mid-West Clinic this year, I ran into our good friends Dr. James Frankel and Brad Smith at the SoundTree both and they introduced me to the Korg Nano series of USB Midi devices. Wow, was I impressed. So much so that I bought the entire bundle on the spot which consists of three USB MIDI controller products and a USB hub. I am going to include a couple of brief descriptions about each of the devices and some info from www.korg.com about them as well.

The products are the Korg Nanokey:

When Korg set out to build a slim-line MIDI controller keyboard, they utilized their years of experience in manufacturing innovative MIDI keyboards to create a great-feeling, velocity sensitive keyboard based off a laptop keyboard. The resulting 25-note keyboard on the nanoKEY will transmit your playing dynamics to your software accurately and expressively. In CC (Control Change) MODE, the keys become MIDI controllers, allowing you to control any MIDI assignable parameters within your software.

The Octave Shift function offers immediate access to the entire MIDI note range. Pitch and modulation buttons are also provided, giving your performances the kind of expression that you would expect from any controller regardless of its size.

This is an incredible keyboard controller that will fit anyone’s budget and has advanced functions and keys that make this quite possibly the best compact controller in this class.

The Korg NanoPad:

When Korg set out to make a drum pad controller, they did their homework - with unique features and exceptionally responsive pads, the resulting padKONTROL became and remains one of the most highly sought-after pad controllers on the market. Enter the nanoPAD, offering 12 excellent feeling and highly responsive pads in a new, smaller footprint. In addition, a new Chord Trigger function lets you enter chords onto a single pad, helping you to make the most of the work surface as you create. The pads are also able to transmit control change messages, making this a great interface for soloing or muting mixer tracks, turning objects on and off, or triggering clips during your live performances.

NanoPAD’s X-Y pad offers ‘Roll’ and ‘Flam’ modes, to help you lay down ultra-realistic drum grooves. The X-Y pad will also send MIDI CC (Control Change), making it a go-to interface for any parameter within your software that requires full range MIDI control such as pitch, cutoff, volume and beyond.

Well, it’s been long and hard but we did it! We were able to introduce 100, serious, Music Education Bloggers to the Internet world through the ME Blogger campaign in 1 year’s time! Congratulations to all of you and to all of us for making our campaign goal!

Please note that I say this is the “Almost” Official list because I am still waiting to hear back from a couple of folks about retaining their blog in the list as we break forth into the 2009 year. As I put out the information about “us” into paper format, I want to ensure that everybody on the Official List is still actively blogging so that the readers will have a complete list of ME Bloggers that have been active throughout the year.

I’ve had a couple of folks, through no real fault of their own, not able to be as productive as they’ve wanted so I’ve removed them from the list. Some of your “numbers” may change as I drop down the slots to account for this (sorry!).

I will be celebrating (and inviting all of the ME bloggers to as well!) the 100 ME Blogger list in a number of ways in the coming month and the OFFICIAL, OFFICIAL LIST will be published on January 1st of 2009 with much fanfare. I was inundated with a number of blog requests for the final slots, so I wanted to make sure that I gave folks a “fair shake” as I looked at the contents of their blogs, the order they were submitted to me, and the number of related posts on the sites. In the end, I’ve had to not accept quite a few blogs that I probably would have accepted earlier in the year and for that I apologize but there were only 100 spots to fill.

It’s my hope that there will be a thousand educated folks blogging about music, education, and technology in the very near future and sharing their expertise -for that, I will pass the torch of recording these bold, new ME bloggers to others to scribe and catalog into the “music history” books. Make no mistake though, the impacts made of these (us) 100 Music Education bloggers will be felt and “seen” in the blogosphere and Internet world for decades, perhaps, centuries to come as everything we write is being cataloged and recorded for those to read in the future. The beauty of teaching is the positive impact we have on our students -with the advent of the Internet, the entire world becomes a classroom. Our thoughts, as written in our blogs, will affect countless thoughts of others, whether we or they know it!

Hello all,

If you’ve been following along at mustech.net, you know I have two major concerts coming up TODAY. Both the 19 piece Grove City Stage Band and 20 piece Grove City College Jazz Ensemble will be performing their 5thAnnual Winter/Christmas Jazz Concerts at 8:00 p.m. today at the Pew Fine Arts Center in Grove City. Our show is amazing both sonically and visually and takes an incredible chunk of my time to put together both musically and as productions. This year one of the senior college students, Matt Ulrich, has added an incredible snow fall effect to our cyclorama and is a must see!; couple that with all the other amazing stuff we do with lights and movements and well,…it’s AWESOME.

The real point of this post was to let you all know that I’ve received over 10 submissions for the last 5 spots on the ME blogger list and I haven’t had the time to get back to everyone yet so I’m posting to let anyone who may still be interested in submitting know that I’ve CLOSED the Blog submissions for the Official 100 ME Blogger campaign. The last entries we’re all pretty good at first glance, so I’m going to take some extra time to determine which of those have been blogging the longest, content areas, most, etc.

Note: Blog Submission for the 100 ME Bloggers is officially closed! Please read this post: http://mustech.net/2008/12/05/blog-submission-is-officially-closed#more-928

Only 31 days to go until the official end of the ME Blogger Campaign. It’s been long and hard, but definitely worth it. The number of folks blogging about music education has exploded since my challenge went out -not quite a year ago to the day. I’m very excited to see where this will go in the years to come.
Joel has become the first ever “Music Education Blogger” Historian. You can find his well done list about the work of the seminal Music Education Bloggers here: http://www.soyouwanttoteach.com/a-partial-timeline-of-music-education-blogging/

I think people will look back and find out that it was us, “the few the proud” the ME bloggers, that started an online revolution about sharing “good”, “accurate”, and “better” knowledge about our music profession and music in general -freely, with anyone with an Internet connection. I’m sure of it! -as the Internet searches already are showing the results of our labours in their various, and many, search result sections!

Now, there are only 5 spots left to become immortalized (well..not really!) as one of the 1st 100 OFFICIAL Music Education Bloggers. Don’t wait to let me know about your Music Education realated Web site. Contact me today either by commenting here or in our contact section above.

One of my students sent this to me and told me that it reminded them of one of my tech. classes (this year) where I showed them how “easy” it was to connect a laptop to a television or LCD projector… Some of them didn’t agree with me about the “easy part” after I went through how to connect via VGA, or S-Video, or Composite, or Component, or God forbid -RF modulation!!! We still have a way to go with regard to making some of these things “easy”, and LESS cables would be nice! Enjoy the video!

Well, I haven’t been able to keep up with MusTech.Net this semester as much as I would like. I’m hoping my schedule will clear a little so that I can write about some of the many cool things that I’m working on both with faculty and colleagues and my students in the VERY near future.

I wanted to take a few seconds to write about a couple of things that are going on this month. First, the Music Education Blog Carnival is being hosted by Discover, Learn, Play this month at http://discoverlearnplay.blogspot.com/. Make sure you that you participate this month in the Music Education Blog Carnival as I’m sure it will be a good one! You can find out more information about the Blog Carnival here: http://mustech.net/muscarn. Also, if you would like to host a music education carnival, please let me know.

As many of you know, I am a huge WordPress fan. I’m thinking about hosting a WordPress Camp this summer in the Pittsburgh area. I know it would be of great benefit to the many educators, students, and business folks in our area. I just finished a new WordPress site for our Borough Council (Yes guys, this one was Pro bono!). It is unbelievable how easy it is to turn WordPress into a content management system and the ease of the back end (how you write posts and pages) is so simple to use that you can show people how to maintain and change content in less than an hour. There is no easier way to go about putting together a Web site than WordPress. I’ve quit using all other software to make Web pages now and I only use WordPress now… This from Frontpage, Dreamweaver, Net Objects, and HTML!!!

You can check out the site here: http://grovecityonline.com

I’m still looking for the brilliant, the bold, the musical, to become the last folks in our quest for 100 Music Education Bloggers. If you are interested please visit or Music Education Blogger page, and contact me here. If you’ve submitted a contact in the last couple weeks, I’ve yet to get to them, I will though -it’s next on my list of mustech.net things to do! If you’re worried I didn’t get your submission, please re-submit.

If you want to see a totally cool Christmas Flash Animation, I still contend that this one is the best!:
http://mustech.net/2007/11/30/the-coolest-christmas-snowglobe-flash-animation

If you know of any flash Christmas animations better than this (or on par), let me know in the comment section below!

Here’s to a great Thanksgiving to all of you!

Humanities and History Profs. and Teachers, if you’re teaching a segment on Rome, prepare to have one of the COOLEST editions to your arsenal of worn out slides, standard power point presentations, faded book pictures, and dusty chalkboard outlines… Google Earth now has completely rebuilt Rome in a navigable, downloadable, and freely available sketchup for the Google Earth client (You can run this without being connected to the Internet).

At each historic site, there are pop-ups with loads of information about each building. Quite frankly, any teacher to incorporate this into their classes will, not doubt, be at the very forefront of technology and course integration. No, it’s not the end all, but it sure is an INCREDIBLE resource that NEVER was available anywhere before. There is currently a curriculum Competition going on for educators, I encourage any qualified educators to jump on this opportunity. Here is the Education Curriculum Competition link.

I was alerted to a number of broken links on my site via a really cool WordPress plugin called broken link checker, and I saw that a number of my SoundTree links were coming up broken. So I went to their site and low-and-behold, a new look and some internal site moving (complete with changed URLs)! I didn’t have time to go through the site thoroughly but it looks great!

In particular, I like the fading graphics on the front page and the very simple, but effective navigation structure that is currently implemented. Their Music Education zone has changed and quite possibly expanded, either way it is way more easy to naviagate and full of useful information.

Here are a couple of quick links to SoundTree resources that you may find very useful:

Music Education Lesson Plans:
http://www.soundtree.com/music-education/lesson-plans

Music Technology/Ed. Articles:
http://www.soundtree.com/music-education/articles

James Frankel has done a great job with SoundTree and has moved them forward in all the right directions since his taking over the reins there. If you are looking for a complete MIDI/Music Education/Music Lab solution for your school, you should make SoundTree your first stop.
